THE COMMANDANT ARRIVES

MAJOR-GENERAL GODLEY AT WELLINGTON. . By Telegraph,—Press Association. Wellington, Wednesday. General Godley, the newly-appointed Commandant of the New Zealand forces, arrived from Sydney to-day, and was met by Col. Robin and other prominent defence officers. The Permanent Artillery formed a guard of honor. General Godley was accompanied by Lieut.Col. Head, director of military training and education, Lieut.-Col. Burnett Stuart, director of military operations and intelligence, and Opt. f). C. Spencer Smith, R.A., staff officer to the Commandant. The new Commandant, interviewed, said he considered the .site of the Australian College admirably situated. He was pleased with the military training going on at Albury. Referring to criticisms by Colonel Gaedke, the German critic on the British military manoeuvres, General Godley said it was difficult for a man like Gaedke to form a proper judgment of the officers in question, because he would not know the conditions under which the manoeuvres were drawn up. They were drawn up by the War Office primarily for testing mobilisation, and without knowing these conditions the critic's judgement was not of the same value it would otherwise have been.
