ALLEGED SMUGGLING
AN AUCKLAND PROSECUTION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. An interesting case of alleged smuggling has occupied' the Auckland Customs officials for a fortnight. The officers visited Whangaparapaaa, a small port on the Great Barrier, on November 25, and boarded the Melbourne Steamship Company's steamer Brisbane. They found, it is alleged,' that one side of a locker which had been sealed up by the Customs officials at Lyttelton, had been broken, and certain uncustomed goods removed. A search discovered eight bottles of whisky and seven of gin concealed about the ship, and it is alleged that a quantity of tobacco had also been rer moved from the locker. The master of the Brisbane and the steward' will be charged to-day with breaches of the Customs Law Act, the first being tliat certain goods upon which the Customs' seal had been placed were secretly conveyed away, and the rest having reference to the concealing of the whisky and gin, both officers being charged with this offence. The maximum penalty in each case is £IOO.
