A DOUCEUR REFUSED
A CONSCIENTIOUS OFFICER. By Telegraph. —Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The following letter has been addressed to the Commissioner of Taxes by Mr. W. M. Tyers, Inspector of the Income Tax Department, the officer who investigated the books of Bowron Bros., of Ohristchurch, with'the result that the firm was fined for sending in incorrect income returns:—"Referring to.an item, class- IX, Department of Internal Affairs, which I see in the Supplementary Estimates, 'allowance to W. M. Tyiers, Inspector of Taxes, £150,' and to a conversation with you to-day, at which my impression was confirmed that this was intended in the nature of a reward to me in connection with, the prosecution of certain taxpayers, I have to ask that you will convey my thanks to the Rt. Hon the Minister of Finance for this in-' tended recognition',' with my earnest request that the item may be withdrawn, from the Estimates-. My reason for making this request is the dteep feeling I have that no officer of the Department should have any direct financial interest in any assessment.
