BOXING
THE HEAVY-WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP. By Telegraph.—Pre33 Association. Westport, Last Night. At Millerton last night; the heavyweight boxing championship of New Zealand was contested by Jim Mitchell, of Millerton, champion, and Bill Rudd, of Wellington, the challenger. In the first round the men mixed things freely, Mitchell having the advantage. In the second round, Rudd, breaking from a clinch, got Mitchell a couple of severe right hand and lefit hand hooks at close quarters, and shortly afterwards sent Mm down for 8 seconds, and again for 9, the gong saving Mitchell. The third round had not gone far when Mitchell was again sent to the boards for <5 seconds, and almost immediately afterwards was sent down again, and counted out. Other special six-round bouts took place, winners being J. O'Neill,, Hooker, Larry, and Clapperton. Mr. Bush made an efficient referee. i
