The verdict of the inquiry into the Whitehaven disaster states that it was due to an explosion of gas and eoa'ldust combined, and that there was insufficient evidence to show that it was due to a defective safety lamp. The closing of the pit was a rightful expedient, for there was no possible means of reaching the entombed miners. FLOODS IN ENGLAND. Received 4, 5.15 p.m. London, December 3. Extensive and serious floods have occurred in the valleys of the Thames,, Trent, and other rivers. THE ANGERS TRAGEDY. Received 4, 5.15 p.m. Paris, December 3. The victim of the Angers tragedy is Chapel, a Parisian. [The body of a man, fearfully mutilated, and at first believed to be that of a foreign banker, was found in a box at Angers.] WELSH CHURCH COMMISSION. Received 4, 5.5 p.m. London, December 3. A feature of the Welsh Church Commission report is the absence of unanimity amongst its members. The Times suggests a fresh commission to examine the methods, and test the statistics of the commission just defunct.
