GREATER NEW PLYMOUTH.
THE OPPOSITION AT FITZROY. At the meeting of electors and ratepayers last night who are apposed to the merging of the Fitzroy district into New Plymouth there w&s an attendance of about seventy, the number of ladies and gentlemen being fairly evenly divided. Mr. Q. Lamb, who was elected to the chair, said all knew the object of the meeting. The fact was those in opposition to the Greater New Plymouth scheme Aid not know exactly how the question stood. It was> considered advisable by the party to pass a strong resolution and appoint a strong committee to> go thoroughly into the matter. He would propose the following resolution:—"That this meeting of ratepayers of the Fitzroy Town Disitrict opposed to the proposed inclusion of this district in the Borough of New Plymouth desire to record our protest against such inclusion, and that the undermentioned ratepayers be a committee to forward petitions and objections against the proposal and to take such other steps in furtherance of our object as they may, consider necessary. 'Further, that the following be the committee: Messrs R. J. Matthews, T. Giddy, R. Old, R. Parkin, E. Lee, G. Lamb, G. Colson, John Black, O. Oxenham, and J. Searle." Mr. Lee, in seconding the resolution, said it was a very good one in the interests of those against the proposal. (Applause.) The chairman explained that the Government must have someone to communicate with when objections were lodged. On being put to the meeting, the resolution was carried unanimously. Mr. Hagensen: One petition or something has been sent to the Government has it not? The chairman: A petition has been sent in. Mr. Hagensen: You think it is necessary that another one should be sent? The chairman: That lies with the committee. Mr. Hagensen: I take it that the objections should be drawn up by a lawyer so that it will be in proper form. There will necessarily be some expense, and 1 do not know if it 'is necessary to have a collection or whether the Board will pay the fees. A voice: The Board, can't take any part in paying the expense. Mr. Hagensen: Then I am prepared to put mv hand in'my pocket. The chairman: There will be no trouble in that respect. This was all the business, and the meeting concluded with the usual compliment to the chair, on the motion, of Mr. R. Old.
