WAITARA NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondents A cadet from Riverton has been appointed to the local Post Office, but more than this is wanted. A very large amount of mail matter is dealt with in this office, and it is not possible for a responsible officer to give this work ari& counter work the amount of attention / that it should receive.

Waitara Eoad butter lui;l a good word said for it yesterday. A customer in the Rerekapa ordered a box at the beginning of July. It was duly sent by coach, and, as.per instructions,'left on the side of the road near the junction of the Okau road and Mount Messenger. There it lay for a week, brgving the elements, before the owner could get out for it. He has been using it pver since, and' finished the remainder only a few day a ago. He said it was splendid even after the four months' keep in the whare. The country and cattle are looking'in the pink of condition all round the district. So well have paddocks come on that already hay-making is going on, whilst a lot more is ready and waiting for the mower. Oats are also well forward and showing good heads, whilst maize is very abundant, and will prove a tiandy change in February, when grass will probably be feeling the effects of the drier weather. Milk returns and tests are high, prices good, and everything points to the farmers having a most prosperous year. I Close on £7OOO will be paid for the November month to the three butter I factories adjacent to Waitara for their butter.

Cattle and sheep are now coming to the works in large numbers, and there is some very prime stuff amongst them. The s.s. Paparoa is due to-day to load wool for Home.

An effort is being made to secure a portion of the railway reserve opposite the borough offices for the purpose of a fire brigade station. There is a long stretch some 18 feet wide admirably suited for the purpose, and it is to be hoped the Department will lease this at a nominal rental to the brigade.
