MUNICIPAL SWIMMING BATHS

OPENING OF THE SEASON.

The baths were lined with a large crowd of interested spectators last night, when a number of races for boys and girls and other items arranged for by His Worship the Mayor (Mr. G. Tisch) were held. Mr. W. Lints was starter and referee, Messrs. E. Pfankuch and F. Turnbull acted as call stewards, and Messrs. H. Stocker and W. L. Newman did the judging. Counting the competitors, there was an attendance of well over 300, which shows the interest taken'in the evening by parents and others. Some of the "small fry" button-lioled Mr. Tisch and wanted to know why there was no event for them! There was only one way out of the difficulty for Mr. Tisch, and he sent them away rejoicing with the information that he would give an afternoon for their especial benefit very shortly. The following programme was carried out:—

Boys, 14 years and under, 50 yards.— R. Brokenshire (2sec) 1; I. Golding (2sec) 2. Time, 48sec. Five competed. Girls, 16 and under, 50 yards.—First heat: Elsie White and E. Giris, 14 and under, 50 yards.—Hilda Jury (3sec) 1; Nellie White (4sec) 2, Time, 46sec. Ten competed. Polo.—This exhibition by teams from the Beach and the East End was an extra, and was given with the object of fostering the game among the schoolboys, as it is understtod that the three schools are entering a team' each and the High School two teams for a competition to he started almost immediately. The game was a very fine one for the first- of the season, and was won by East End by five 'goals to one. F. Turnbull captained the winners and A. L. Dixon the Beach.

Mrs. Tisch presented the prizes at the close of the gathering, when hearty cheers were given for Mr. Tisch, the donor of the prizes.
