ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION
[DEPARTURE OF THE TERRA NOVA. I By Telegraph.—Press Association. I Christehurch, Saturday. The British Antarctic expedition's ship, the Terra Nova, left to-dav for Port Chalmers, en route for the Antarctic. Captain Scott and the members of the | expedition were given a hearty send-cff. The ship was made ready for sea by noon, at which hour Divine service was conducted on the poop by the Rev. E. Eliott Chambers, and Bishop Julius preached a short, impressive and appropriate sermon. Captain and Mrs. Scot', | Dr. and Mrs. Wilson, Mr. B. C. Day, motor expert, and Mr. J. J. Kinsey (local representative of the expedition) were entertained at a luncheaon on board the Kuapehu by the chairman and directors of the New Zealand Shipping Company. The Terra Nova cast off shortly before 3 o clock, amidst the blowing of svreni by vessels in the port, explosion of day signals, and the cheers of the crowd. She was accompanied to the Heads bv rhe Harbor Board's tug, on board which were 300 or 400 guests, and by numerous small steamers crowded with excursionists. The vessel was heartily dipped as she passed H.M.S. Cambrian. Sir Joseph .Ward telegraphed to the chairman of the Harbor Board, regretting his inability to be present, andVishing the expedition '-'God speed/' Captain Scott joins the Terra Nova on Monday at Port Chalmers, from which port the vessel departs on Tuesday.
