GIRLS KILLED AT A FIRE
PANIC-STRICKEN LEAP TO DEATH. By Cable —Press Association—Copyright. Received 23, 12.40 a.m. New York, November 27. Twenty-four girls were burned to death or crushed on the pavement by jumping from a four-storey paper-box factory at Newark, New York State. A panic broke out amongst, the girls, and they dashed to the fire escapes and leaped thence to the street. An enormous crowd collected. Firemen with life nets saved thirty girls, who were .climbing down ledges and fire escapes. The origin of the fire is unknown. Six others are missing. The building was gutted. The bodies have not yet been recovered. Fifty were taken to the hospital. The Chief of the Fire Brigade was injured by a falling wall. One boy was found seated at his machine in an attitude as though working. He evidently failed to realise his peril, or else he fainted. Numbers of the crowd knelt and prayed. Bodies hit the firemen in their descent, and some rebounded from the nets on to the pavements. The loss is estimated at £30,000.
