THE BROOME HURRICANE
FURTHER DETAILS. By Oable—Press Association—Copyright. Perth, November 25. At Broome many people are rendered homeless. The telephone system is wrecked. Reports coming from inland show that the damage there was more serious than at first thought. Many houses, crops and gardens have been destroyed. Gangs of prisoners are clearing the Broome streets of fallen trees and other debris. So far as is known three whites were drowned. Many lost luggers laden with pearl shell and probably pearls, therefore it is difficult to estimate the damage. The beach is strewn with thousands of dead seabirds and fish, showing the severity of the hurricane.
Later reports show that some missing | luggers managed to reach places of safety along the coast, though in a battered and dismasted condition. Eight or nine* are still unaccounted for, with approximately twenty-four hands. The master of the schooner Eua reports passing through millions of dead schnapper and other fish. A great quantity of coral is also strewn on the beaches, which is believed to have some connection with the great submarine disturbance recently recorded by Australian observers.
