A FATAL SWIM. By Telegraph—Press Association. Westport, Wednesday. John Mason, aged 25, solicitor, went to swim in the Buller river last even- j ing and was observed later swimming up the river, lie has not been seen since, llis clothes were found this morning in the dressing room. His mother resides at Amberlev. Westport, Last Xight. The body of J. W. .Mason, solicitor, who was last seen bathing in the Buller river on Tuesday night, was discovered this afternoon about four o'clock. An inquest was held to-night, when a verdict of accidental drowning was returned. It is surmised that deceased was seized with cramp and sank just where the body was ultimately found. He was a popular young fellow, who took an active leading pal't in local athletics and dramatic works. A BUSINESS MAN'S SUICIDE. Dunedin, Wednesday. At seven o'clock this morning the body of Ralph Ewing, managing director of the Ewing Phosphate Co., was found on the Main road, Clarendon, with his throat cut. He had been ill for some time and was, despondent. He was aged 45 and was a single man. Dunedin, Last Night. An inquest was held this afternoon on the body of Ralph Ewing, manager of the Ewing Phosphate Co.'s work at Clarendon, who was found dead this morning. Evidence showed that the deceased was in particularly good spirits last night, and gave no cause for suspicion that his condition was in any way abnormal. It was also shown that of lata the deceased had suffered from sleeplessness and general ill-health. A verdict was returned that death was caused by injuries selfinflicted. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Nelson, Lasfe- J?ight. An octogenarian inmate of. the Old Men's Home attempted suicide this afternoon by cutting his throat with a! razor, inflicting serious injuries. He is now in the hospital, in a serious condition. > A MINER KILLED. Westport, Last Night. _ A fall of . coal in the Mangatina section of the Westport Coal Co.'s Millerton mine was responsible for the death of a miner named Edward Quinlan, a single man, at 3 o'clock to-day. A CHILD DROWNED. Christchurch, Last Night. Marion Catherine Compton, aged two years, the daughter of Mr. S. Compton, of Methven, was found drowned at 5.30 p.m. to-day in a water-race running past her parents' house.
