AUSTRALIAN LAND TAX. London, November 18. Presiding at the meeting of shareholders of the Scottish Australian Investment Company, Mr. G. T. Rait, chairman, said that the Australian land tax was unconstitutional, illogical, and bound to fail. The British Australasian Society intended to protest against its receiving Royal assent. CANADIAN POLITICS. Vancouver, November 18. It is probable that Mr. Mcßride, Premier of British Columbia, will hold a high position in the next Dominion Conservative Government. There is a growing belief that the Liberals are losing ground.
CAPTAIN COOK MEMORIAL. London, November 18. The Royal Society has voted twentyfive guineas to the Captain Cook Memorial Fund. A commendatory letter sent to the society recalled the society's connection with the initiation of Cook's voyages. NEW CUNARD LEVIATHAN. ' London, November 18. The Cunard liner, for which tenders have been called, will have a length of 885 feet, and a breadth of 95 feet. She will cost £2,000,000. She will be driven by turbines. The accommodation will include a theatre and swimming bath.

The detective force is being remodelled on tlie English pattern. The force will be placed under one chief, and its sole duties will be to catch criminals. It will, be independent of the uniformed police.
