COUNT TOLSTOI LIVES
AND HIS CONDITION IMPROVES! By Cable. —Press Association. —Copyright. St. Petersburg, November 17. It now turns out that the report of Count Tolstoi's death was premature, and that he is still lingering. The announcement led to remarkable demonstrations in Russia. A later message states that Tolstoi's condition is more favorable. The Countess refrains from seeing him, lest She should excite him. The news of his death emanated from a member of the family, and caused the cancellation of all lectures and the publication of lengthy obituaries in every country. NO PLACE FOR A CELEBRITY. PROPOSED RECONCILIATION WITH THE CHURCH. Received 18, 9.30 p.m. St. Petersburg, November 18.
The temperature at Astopowa is 101. Tolstoi's pulse ranges between 100 and 120. He has frequent intermissions of respiration, but no appetite, continual drowsiness, and is alternately unconscious and delirious.
Astopowa is only a station with a few huts, and Count Tolstoi's family is living in a side-tracked railway car, whilst a crowd of correspondents is accommodated in another ear. The stationmaster has given Count Tolstoi and the nurses his one-storey log-house.
The Holy Synod favorably discussed the rescinding of the excommunication after the report of the Bishop of Parthenius of a conversation with Tolstoi,* wherein he had expressed a desire for reconciliation. The Bishop of Tawboo has left for Astopowa.
