A ROYAL FRIENDSHIP
The Princess Patricia of Connaught, who has recently been on a visit to Princess Henry of Battenberg at Madresfield Court, has an old friend at that place in the shape of a woifhound named "Captain," who is far from' being of a sociable character, and visitors to Madresfleld are warned not to make the risky experiment of attempting to cultivate his friendship. "Cap'tain" was a guest at Windsor Castle some years ago, where, much to his dislike, he was kept chained for the greater part of the day in one of the kennels. Several visitors came to see him, among them being the Princess Patricia, but he repelled the attentions of all by ominous growk and the display of a gleaming set of teeth. The Princess, however, who is very fond of dogs, determined to make another effort to overcome Captain's prejudice against strangers. Her Royal Highness went to the kennels accompanied by one of the keepers, and sucseeded after some time in patting the wolfhound's head with her hand. The Princess then, despite a warning protest from the keeper, quietly unfastened the chain and held the captive, who promptly jumped round her uttering the loudest but very friendly barks. Ever since "Captain" has been the devoted friend of the Princess Patricia, and always remembers her Royal Highness, though often months elapse without their meeting.
