EGMOXT VILLAGE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The open-night of the Mutual Improvement Society held in the hall on Friday evening last, proved an unqualified success. There was a large attendance, and an excellent programme was presented. Mr. A. Morton, president of the society, occupied the chair. Proceedings were opened by an overture by Mr,, G Marsh's orchestra. Then followed a debate on "Should women have equal political rights with men ?" Mr. R. Burrows supported by Mrs. Baxter and Messrs. E. Davis and N. Olson championed, the fairer sex, and were opposed by Messrs. M. J. Marsh, N. George, N. C. Fenton and G. Foster. A vote resulted in a win for the affirmative by 37 to 33. The. second.half of the programme comprised selections on Mr. Davies' graphophine: reading, ''Trials of a bashful man," Mr. It. G. Marsh; song, "Killarney," Mr. R. Burrows; pianoforte duet, Misses Rudd and Smith; song, "Go to Sea," Mr. N. C. Fenton; recitation, Mr. J. Currie; scene from Julius Caesar, •'Brutus and Cassius," Messrs. G. F. Dewhirst and G; Foster. Mr. Morton then made brief reference to the aims and work of the society, after which an excellent supper was handed round.. The floor was then cleared for dancing, which was kept up, to excellent music supplied by the orchestra, until nearly 2 o'clock. Mr. R. G.' Marsh acted as M.C. I understand that Mrs. Bilton has sold her Maude Road property, and is shifting to Kent Road.
