STRATFORD DAY BY DAY
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. A meeting of the executive of the C'humber of Commerce was held last night. A letter was received from .Mr. Kerr Maxwell, of I'uniwhakau, in regard to the statement of the District Traffic Manager that there was practically no pilfering at Douglas railway station. This he contradicted., and said that in three month-, he had lost £25 worth of goods. He considered that the Department should appoint someone to look after the goods. It was decided to forward the letter to the Traffic Manager. The question of the opening up of the Mountain quarry was discussed, and a resolution was carried urging on the Government that as the time for metalling had arrived, work at the quarry should be resumed, and that the line should he extended to the reef as soon as possible. It was decided to send a copy of the resolution to all local bodies in Taranaki, asking their support. It was resolved to ask the Traffic Manager to arrange the train service to Te Wera on Christinas Eve and New Year's Eve Lso that the 3.50 train to Douglas should I run through to Te Wera, leave there about" 5.30, arrive at Stratford about 7 p.m., and leave on the return journey about 10.30 p.m. At the meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last night, the dangers of Regan and Fenton streets crossings were ■ again referred to, and it was decided to ask the Department to erect alarm bells, a proposition which some time i'back the authorities said they could not give effect to, on account of the labor involved, hut since when the signal boxes have been erected, from which it is now claimed the bells could easily be worked. In the course of the discussion, reference was made to the need of a subway from Broadway to Juliet-street. The discussion drifted into the vexed issue of what the Railway Department I intended doing with the station, and it {was contended that in the interests of the town an effort should be made to get the Department to say what was going to happen. People would be then in a position to provide for the future, jand the policy of the town in regard to i public improvements could be framed in ; accordance. I The local Chamber of Commerce is ' asking the Department to consider the 1 advisability of arranging a daily mail service with Whangamomona. It is 'pointed out that the present service is ' inconvenient to business men, as they have only a couple of hours to get goods ready to go out by post, or to answer ■ correspondence by the return mail. In addition to this, the mail arrives on ' Thursday, the half-holiday. On account of ill-health, Mrs. Geddes ■ has tendered her resignation as a teacher 1 at the High School. The Stratford and Eltham Rifle Clubs 1 fire a match on the local range to- '■ morrow. ■ The following are some of the dairy 1 factory payments for Saturday:— Xgaere 1 £2319, Logarth £1623, Cardiff £1545. The Stratford School Committee has ' decided to give the scholars a holiday on ■ the second day of the Stratford Show. > The public are pleased to notice that ' in spite of various reports the Government are keeping going with the Ongarue railway, as evidenced by the grant placed on the Estimates. It will also be good news for the various local bodies ■throughout Taranaki that a grant of £15,000 is to be expended on the extension of the Mount Egmont railway.
