EGMONT COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting was held last Friday. Present: Crs. Dudley (chairman)*, Maxwell, Farquhar, Hurst, Young, Harvey, Willcox and Matßeynolds. ROAD ROLLER. A good deal of discussion arose over the advisability of procuring a road roller. It was proposed by Cr. Young and seconded by Cr. Willcox, that a road roller be procured.—Crs. Farquhar, Maeßeynolds and Hurst raised objection oil the grounds that the Council did not do sufficient continuous metalling to receive the beneficial results that are necessary in comparison to its cost, ana that it was extremely doubtful if the bridges in the county were capable of carrying the additional weight (approximately, 3000 lb.).—The voting resulted: Ayes:" Crs. Wilcox, Young, Maxwell, Dudley. Noes: Crs. Farquhar, Macßeynolds," Hurst, Harvey.—The chairman gave his casting vote against the motion. GRAVEL RESERVES.
The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote, notifying that the gravel reserves, formerly held by the Taranaki County Council, have now been gazetted in the name of the Egmont County Council. TELEPHONE. The secretary of the Oaonui Dairy Company, Mr. Markham, wrote asking for permission to erect telephone poles to connect with the telephone bureauPermission granted. ELTHAM ROAD LOAN.
A letter was read from the Taranaki County Council with reference to the Eltham road special loan: "Subjoined hereto please receive notice, given undei sub-section 2, section 91, Local Bodies Loans Act, 1908, relative to the transfer of the above debt to your county." Resolved, "That as the legality of the rate is not now questioned, the Council write to the Treasury asking that the necessary steps be taken to have the loan taken over by this Council." COMPLAINT. Mr. R. Watson wrote to the Council (per Foreman Munro), complaining that a number of trees had fallen on his section, near the Wireniu road, and damaged his fence, causing his cattle to stray on to the road. He had been for some years clearing fallen trees off his fence line.—Mr. Watson to be informed that the road has not yet been handed over to the Council. RAHOTU NORTHERN.
Foreman F. Newport reported:—Busy cleaning and widening water-tables between Oaonui and Rahotu, carting out the balance of the maintenance metal between Puniho and Pungarehu; laying down about ten chains of new road with this metal and blinding same during the month. Inspected the hill south of Mr. T. Fleming's gate and find it will cost about £42 to widen the road 14 feet at his corner. The material to be shifted from this hill is of no use, only for filling, there not being enough stone in it for road work. Inspected Plumber's bend, and to widen the road 10 feet at this bend will cost about £l2. The material here is the same as the other —no use for road work. Re footpath through Rahotu township, through not having enough money I was unable to complete the work.—Cr. Maxwell thought the Council should spend up to £5 for the last mentioned work, providing the residents give assistance to the same value. He moved in accordance.—Seconded by Cr. Young and carried. EXPENSES. The sum of £0 6s was voted to the Council's delegate as expenses in connection with the Tail way deputation.
