The attendance was 4000. Hazlitt and Faev opened the bowling, but the bulk was borne by Laver ana Armstrong, who were both accurate, j Armstrong, bowled eleven overs, oi, which ten were maidens. The South Africans gave a disappointing display, except Nourse and Faulkner, who added 84, whilst Strieker and Commaille added 61. Nourse batted stolidly for an hour and three-quarters, hitting four 4's in a chanceless innings. Faulkner gave a delightful exhibition, battihg for 115 minutes, and hitting six 4's, hitting all round the wicket, and giving no chances. They wiped out the deficit, and looked, likely to make a big score. Schwarz, at] the second ball, made a wild hit and was' caught. Llewellyn made things lively | until caught in the long field. Vogler also hit "out, and fell into Matthew's trap. Eight for 175. Commaille joined Strieker. Both were cautious, and each was missed. The fielding was slack, and the bowling was beaten till Strieker, becoming impetuous, was run out when Strieker was just opening a plucky stand. Pegler went out first ball. Matthews bowled splendidly. • j Warne and Smith opened for Victoria, Schwarz and Vogler bowling. Smith kept the field lively, scoring 21 in a quarter of an hour. Then he slogged at a deceiving "googlie" and was bowled. Vogler brat Warne with a fast ball. Two for 47. Seitz was foolishly run out, and Laver walked in front of the stumps.
