He was at the wickets for -two hours and a hall, and hit six fours. Four for 143. Ivortlang's was a sound exhibition, after a scratchy opening. Armstrong was uncomfortable, the "googlies" troubling him. Matthew's was the best exhibition of the match. He began in a. doubtful way, but wanned up to his work,, and hit well all round, batting for 55 minutes. Vogler shaved Matthew's andHazlitt's wickets repeatedly. The visitors opened badly to Hazlitt and Facv. Snooke was never easy, and was caught in the wickets. Sherwell was beaten by a fast ball. Zulch and Nourse made a slight stand, the former being beaten by Armstrong's fourth ball. Nourse and Faulkner, playing for "keeps," put up a,stolid defence. Fifty was scored in one hour. The attendance was 6500, and the wicket good but easy. It was, however, too slow for the break bowlers.
