EAST END BATHING
ANNUAL MEETING.
The first annual meeting of the East End Bathing Reserve Committee was held in the Bathing shed on Wednesday, Mr. L. F. Webster presiding. The report pointed out that the committee came into existence in January of this year, when the Borough Council accepted the committee as managers of the bathing reserve. A promenade concert was held on February 3 to raise funds for the building of a new shed, and the committee made £39 Is Id, on which the Borough Council gave a £ for £ subsidy. The committee, with the assistance of others, built the present men's shed by working bees. The shed cost £93 19s, which left the committee in the Council's debt to the amount of £ls 16s lOd. Another concert was held shortly afterwards, when the shed was finished, the collection realising £2l 17s Id. The committee applied to the Borough Council for a subsidy on this amount, but the Council remitted the £ls 10s lOd due to it, and granted p, subsidy on £8 for the purchase of pipes, the. committee desiring to fill in ana drain the swamp so as to give more ground. The committee had laid the pipes and filled in part of the swamp, and planted a number of trees, and, with a few more,,working bees, it was hoped t» finish the swamp before the season set in. At present the committee had £IG 19s 4d in hand, and the Council had £5 10s 3d to the committee's credit, making in all £22 9s 7d, so the committee had had a very successful year. The committee thanked Messrs. Rowej (for grass seed) and Buttimore (for trees, etc.), the press, and all who had assisted during the season. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Mr. L. F. Webter was re-elected chairman of the committee, and Mr. •W. H. Fletcher re-elected secretary. It was decided that the executive committee should consist of the chairman and secretary, and Messrs. A. Kivell, A. Duller, H. Moon, P. Flanagan, C. H. Hammond and F. Scrivener. [ Several members of the general comI mittee having left the district, Messrs. S. Griffiths, L. Hill, J. Buttimore, A. Christian, 'J. W. Sturmey and G. Knight were added to the committee. I The secretary was authorised to purI chase material required in the shed. Tt was decided to open the season on the 24th inst. Sports will be held on the sands, with races for children. The Garrison Band will be in attendance, ana afternoon tea will be supplied. During the proceedings Mr. A. Hardgrave will I be presented with a Royal Humane So- | ciety medal for saving life.
