St. Lumsden has gone off. Culprit lias won three races inside a Diabolo scored an overdue win in the Canterbury Cup. The first time Los Angelos gets out decently thev won't catch him. The lori" drawn-out Canterbury and Auckland meetings will be brought to a close this afternoon. Miscount's fifth consecutive second was a head defeat in the Nursery on Wednesday. What luck! Old Naumai must be getting quite accustomed to filling the role of runner-up in the Electric at Ricearton. Hard to beat on his own mud-heap— Deeley. He rode three firsts and a eecond at Ellerslie on Wednesday. Con the Shaughran may be able to flv, but, like the Irishman, he leaves his wings at home when he needs them most. An Ellerslie debacle. Uhlando and Waitapu finished last in the King Edward Memorial Handicap on Wednesday, and Emblem, Royal Day and Waiari •were beaten out of places in their respective engagements. Taranaki is badly in need of a few good horses at present.
Mr. R. J. Matthews stepped out a nice looking colt in the shape of Mortite in the Maiden at Waverley, and the three-year-old won just as easily as Shuja did for Messrs Matthews two seasons ago. Mortite cost his owner 100 guinea as a yearling. Taupo has contested the hurdle race three seasons running at Waverley, but his most recent display was very disappointing. Last year he was only beaten "by a head in a "close finish with Regulation.
Clemora was sent out a hot favorite for the Cup at Carterton, but he never got closer than third at any part of the journey, and eventually finished fifth. On the second day the Lepperton horse scored over a shorter course, and as usual "dodged" a crowd of his most constant supporters. Another Taranaki-trained one, Merchantman, picked up a double on the same day. He ran second to Sunbonnet on the opening day of the meeting, beating Gold Battery, Purakau, Thetis and Afterthought, so his party had something to <give them a lead, and they must have had a good win on Thursday. Continuance was sent out a very hot favorite foi the Maiden at Ellerslie on Saturday, and on recent form the race looked a moral for him. He shaped disaupointingly, however, and finished outside a dividend. After the race the stewards met to consider a report by the look-out steward (Mr. G. Cutts) on the running of Continuance. It is said that he stated his opinion in no uncertain manner, but after hearing the defence, the stewards decided to take no action. The Gisborne liorse was saddled up again on Wednesday, and had no difficulty in winning the open hurdle race. Waitara nominations are very numerous this year, and the club has reason to congratulate itself on the good class of entries received. Mr. Henrys' weights are due on or about the 16th inst.
The poor quality of horses running at Waverlev on Wednesday was remarkable. Notorious, in the big races, was chased home by a pair of hurdle horses. Last year Notorious acted as runner-up in the Flying and Prince of Wales' Handicaps, so his victories were well deserved. Koran, Waiari, Emblem, Golden Loop, Te Roti, Staybov and Overtime sported silk at the gathering last year, but 1 did not see anything of the same elass out this week. It is stranse how these small meetings go up and down.
