THE CO-OPERATIVE SYSTEM
COMPLAINT FROM WESTPORT. By Telegraph. —Press Association. Westport, Last Night. A largely attended public meeting was held to-night in the Town Hall to protest against the payment of only 8s 6d to the men engaged on construction work on the Westport-Inangahua railway, and a resolution was carriect that, owing to the unsatisfactory way in which the railway construction in tliit. district is carried on under the co-opera-tive system, this meeting urges the Government to carry on the work in this district under day Avages, and to pay the local standard wage, which is 10s per day. It was stated by one member of the labor union that the Premier urged the men to keep the cradles full, but they found, with the small wages paid, that it took them all their time to keep their stomachs full. A big committee was set up to further the objects of the meeting.
