SHIPMASTERS' SALARIES
AN UXREMUXERATIVE CALLING. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, November 11. In the Merchant Service Guild case Captain Watson, secretary of the New Zealand branch of the Guild, further examined, favored a system of payment by seniority. There was a dearth of officers in Australia, and the Union Company a few months ago was short of officers in New Zealand. The calling did not attract, and men would not stay in it when wages were not good enough. Something should be done to prevent shipowners intimidating masters. Received 11, 9.30 p.m. Sydney, November 11. The claims of the Merchant Service Guild were further heard at the Arbitration Court. A suggestion was made regarding the parties coming to terms. The Judge asked to have the suggestions put in writing. He would then meet both sides. Evidence as to the cost of living is proceeding. It has been shown that rents are enormously cheaper in England than in Australia.
