A CHAMPION AMONG CHAMPIONS
One of the moat interesting features of the great show on the island of Jersey, held in August last, insofar as New Zealanders are concerned, was the remarkable success of the daughters of Mr. Clarke's renowned Jersey bull Campaniles' Sultan. i-o as to thoroughly understand the position and to appreciate it, it should be explained taut the Island of Jersey—which is about eleven miles in length—and therefore oniy readies little further than I from New Plymouth to Waitara, is divided up into i\i elve parishes—a parish representing an area of land which may be equivalent to what, is called a "district" in Xew Zealand. Before the great show each year, each parish holds its own parish show. Winning animals at the parish shows usually comprise the entries for the big show. Sometimes a few that are not in the prize-whining lists are also entered, but the parish shows are useful, inasmuch as they weed out the less desiraMe airnials, and thus make those coivpr, ng at the big show ' ~ t :'i! mais ol i.i-j .lir-'hest quality. iclass at the big show there are a \aided, first of all, the first, second, third, fourth and reserve prizes, after which the judges award a prize to the best animal in that particular class from each parish, and, as there are twelve parishes on the island there are twelve parish prizes in each class, of course if each parish is represented. In the class for -'Heifers in Calf," born on or after December 31, 1!W, and before December ISJOS, there were 55 entries, and there were fourteen prizes, including the parish prizes. Of this number two of Campaniles' Sultan's stock won parish prizes, viz., Columbine the Third won the Trinity Parish Prize, and Pierott's I idle fourth, won the St. Martin's parish prize. The next class was for ""Heifers in Milk. less than three years of age at date of exhibition." In this class there were forty-four entries, representing ten parishes. Again, two daughters of Campaniles' Sultan won the Trinity and St. Martin's parish prizes, viz., Golden Fern':, Rose Ninth and Zanzibar's Lottv, respectively, the former being placed first in the class. As no other bull claimed two prize-winning daughters in either of the classes, it will be realised what a victory this is for Campaniles' Sultan. It is' all the more rotable in view of the fact that Campaniles' Sultan has only thirteen daughters on the island. All of the animals in these two classes were the progeny of the best animals that are owned on the island, and also others which have been sold for export ai prices as high as £2OOO. New Zealand may well feel proud in possessing a bull of such remarkable distinction as Campaniles' Sultan. It should also be mentioned that two of his daughters were purchased for America, and when sold by auction they made the highest prices for animals of their age ia the sales. Had these animals remained on the island it is more than probable that they also would have been in the prizewinning: list. This interesting information has just come to hand by the last mail from Home, and will add additional interest to Mr. Clarke's sale to-day at Waiwakaiho, for Campaniles' Siiitan will be offered at auction together with several | of his sons and daughters.
