By 3 o'clock play was in £u>. swing, the ceremony of the throwing of the jack having been performed by the' wife of the president, Mrs. George Grey.' From the upper storey of the pavilion, one got a bird's eye panorama of New Plymouth, which just looked charming in its spring robes. Tea was arranged in the adjacent marquee, the floral decorations being charming.y ui'ranged by Mrs. Sinclair. Amongst those present were: Mrs. Grey, dainty white embroidered muslin, black feathered hat lined wiUi pale blue; Mrs. Rudd, pretty white Liu-a coat and skirt, faced with comllower blue, heliotrope hat; Mrs. Aiumaon, white insertioned muslin, very smart black and white hat; Mrs. A. D. Gray, brown eolienne, cream lace yoke, brown and green toque; Mrs. Mark looked extremely well in a cream cloth coat and skirt, faced with pale blue, charming black feathered hat; Mrs. Ewing, cream eolienne, biscuit colored crinoline straw •hat, swathed with brown tulle and shaded roses; Mrs. F. Orbell, smart white linen costume, braided with black, black feathered hat; her friend wore a! white linen costume, piped with pale: blue, pretty black hat, wreathed with tinv pale pink and blue roses; Mrs. Sinclair, pretty black chiffon taffeta, cream chiffon yoke, embroidered in silk flowers, black and white straw hat with large white feather; Mrs. Day, vieux Tose linen costume, biack feathered toque; Mrs. Jackson, white linen with black and white facings, white liat, finished with loops of pink and blue striped linen; Mrs. A. Smart, cream silk, pretty hat of cream moss brown, swathed with cream and brown tulle; Mrs. J. Avery, black and white costume; Miss Avery, navy yoke, finished with pale blue floral guipe, brown hat wreathed with clustered pink roses; Miss Falder, dark prunella colored costume, cream silk and lace yoke, violet hat to correspond, trimmed with white roses; Mrs. Hooper, black and white costume, cream lace vest veiled in black lace, black and white 'hat; Mrs. Sturtevant, grey costume, green hat finished with shaded lilacs; Mrs. Harle, grey black hat; Mrs. Brooking, navy costume, 'green hat with pink roses; Miss Curtis, reseda green costume, black hat; Mrs. Paget, pale blue and white striped eolienne, pretty cinnamon 1 brown hat, with saxe blue liberty scarf; Mrs. R. Mrs. Chaney gave a most enjoyable i afternoon tea on the same afternoon, in' honor of Mr. and Mrs. Gapper, who are 1 at present visiting New Plymouth, they! being the guests of Mrs. Johns. During' the afternoon vocal items were given by i Mrs. V. R. Cruiekshank, Misses Leatham| and Gapper. The hostess was robed inj a cream silk voile, inset with cream silk insertion; Mrs. Bewley, cream coat andskirt, grey hat with pink roses; Miss G.| BewJey, lettuce green linen, burnt straw| hat with lilac; Miss Leatham, navy bluei costume, black hat with pink roses; Miss Maginnity (Nelson) green striped coatj and skirt, liat en suite; Mrs. Evans, blue striped coat and skirt, black fea-j thered toque; Miss Evans looked charming in a cornflower blue linen, putty colored hat, swathed with black silk; Miss B. Evans was robed in cream, pretty green hat with pink roses; Miss F. Evans, white embroidered muslin, dainty cornflower blue hat; Miss Bedford. cream costume, violet hat with black silk bows; Mrs. J. Paul, very handsome violet costume, richly lined with black lace insertion, black chiffon tcque, finished with purple irises; Mrp. Last, but decidedly not least, in the Theatre Royal, the local Amateur Operatic Society produced Cellier's comedy opera "Dorothy," Thursday evening, to a crowded audience. Everything went ; off from start to finish in a brilliant style. As for the dresses and actors, they simply surpassed themselves. So professional-like were they, one coula easily feel they were witnessing an opera by J. C. Williamson and Co. Amongst the audience I noticed Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Bewley, Miss Bewley, Mrs. H. Davy, Miss Davy, Miss Carte, Mrs.' Fookes, Misses Capel, Miss Colson, Mrs.' R. Cock, Mrs. P:'get, Misses Bedford (2), Misses Webster (2), Misses Morey, Miss B. Rennell, Misses Humphries, Mrs. Home, Mrs. C. Clarke, Mrs. W. Bayly, Miss Leatham, Miss Maginnity, Mrs. Penn, Mrs. Paul, Miss Cunningham, Mrs. Cruiekshank, Mrs. T. C. List, Mrs. Percy Webster, Mrs. Rowe, Mrs. Percy Lawson, Mrs. A. Jones, Mrs. C. M. Hall, Mrs. Morrison, and a number of others. PERSONAL ITEMS.
