AMUSEMENTS

♦ DOROTHY. The final rehearsal of "Dorothy" by the New Plymouth Amateur Opera/tic Society in the Theatre Royal last night convinced those privileged to see it that the presentation of the opera on the nights of Thursday and Friday next will be musically and artistically successful. The selection of principals has been most happy, and in the cast there are those who demonstrated last night the possession of rare ability. A rehearsal by any operatic company, either operatic or professional, is no real criterion of its work before an audience, for it is to the public that the player looks for his or her inspiration. Last night the noticeable features were that the'principals had adequate and excellent, conceptions of their parts, throwing vim into their work; that the sweet lyrics that have made - TJorothy" what it is, were exceedingly well sung; thai there are many fine vocalists in the. .Society; that the choruses were attacked with the necessary abandon and were musically strong, successful and artistic, and that there is a real intention to do the best that is in every member appearing on the boards. In short, we are sure that the '•'Dorothy" of this week will wholly charm the public. The choruses are so powerful that more instrumental volume than was available last night is imperative; and the en.trances and exits of supernumeraries should be effected more smartly. The hardly perceptible Haws will wear away before the public, which cannot be too large for the merit of the company.
