Received 29, 6.30 p.m. .Flemington, October 29. The Cup meeting of the Victoria Racing Club drew the biggest crowd to Melbourne that has ever been known, consequently it was not surprising that although the weather was unpromising the attendance did not suffer. Rain fell durin« the nisht and continued in the morning, but cleared before noon. When the races were run, the -weather was fine but cloudy and sunless. There was a great crowd of visitors from all parts of the continent, including the Governor-Ceneral (Earl Dudley), Admiral Sir D. H. Bosanquet and Vice-Admiral Sir Richard Poore, with their suites, and all the principal society people. There was a great display of dressing. The racing proved good. The Derby field was the largest, though the race was not wildly exciting. Results:— Maiden Plate, of 300 sovs., one mile.— Blue Gem 1. Aurate 2, Bowhill 3. Eleven started. Won easily by three lengths,] the third horse four "lengths away. Time, lmin 4'2y»sec. Maribyrnong Plate, a sweepstake of 25 sovs each, with 1500 added; second horse to receive 400 and the third 200 sovs. from the stake; for two-year-olds; five furlongs.—Philio 1, Popinjay 2, Woolerina 3. Souchong and Sweet Malt were scratched. Elvanite and Calidor were first off. When the field settled down Woolerina took charge from Philip, Calidor. Twa Brigs, Popinjay and Elvanite. Philio fell back a little, but was always in a good place in the centre of the field. At the three-furlong post Woolerina led from Popinjay and Flaith. Popinjay led at the distance, but Philio came through, and won by a length anda-half, Woolerina four lengths away. Time, lmin 3sec. Hotham Handicap, of. 300 sovs, one mile and a quarter.—Flavian 1, Call Boy 2, Somnambulist 3. Also started: Kerlie, Carl Dour, Prizefighter, Iliad, Moorilla, Optimism and Vivacious. Kerlie, Flavian and Lansloh were first away. Round the back Optimism had half a length lead from Vivacious, Prizefighter, Kerlie, Langloh, Matouree and Call Boy, in that order, Rounding the turn Optimism, Vivacious and Langloh fell. A fine, exciting finsh, won by a neck, with a length and a-half between second and third. Time 2min 35% sec. THE VICTORIA DERBY.

Of 25 sovs each, with 2000 sovs. added; second horse to receive 400 and the, third 20030V5. from the stake; for three-year-olds. One mile and a-half. (McLachlan), 8,10 3 Danaus was scratched. Desert Rose" was the first to show out from a good start, and she led round to the river by two lengths from Beverage, St. Wyne, Indiscreet, Styria, Lager, Golden Point, Bobadea, with Tanami last. At the abattoirs the first division were Desert Rose, two lengths ahead of Lager and Beverage, then three lengths away, Bobadea, S Styria, Indiscreet, St. Wyne, Golden Point, Hartfell and Tanami. Styria moved up to fourth place at the sheds, five lengths separating her from the next division, which was led by Golden Point. I Beverage led into the straight from Styria, Lager and Desert Rose. At the distance Bobadea took third place, and in this order they finished, Beverage win- [ ning by three-quarters of a length, and Bobadil four lengths away third. Hartfell was four lengths behind, then came | Lager, Desert Rose, Golden Point, Indiscreet and Tanami. Time, 2min iiy^cc. Melbourne Stakes, of 1000 sovs., one mile and of the Marsh 1, 'Artillerie 2, Trafalgar 3. Also started: Alawa, Flavinius, Parsee, Maltine, Comedy King and Danaus. Son of the Marsh led from start to finish. At the mile he was three lengths from Maltine, the next being Danaus, Alawa, Trafalgar, Comedy King, and Artillery last. Son of the Marsh increased his lead to four lengths passing the abattoirs and led into the straight, where Maltine rapidly fell away. Artillerie and Trafalgar were both coming fast. Won by three-quarters of a 'Jejigth, half a length between the next ■ two. Parsee was fourth, then came Alawa, Comedy King, Danaus, Flavinius, and Maltine a bad last. Time, 2min 1% sec.

CoburgStakes, of 300 sovs., one milePerilous (6.7) 1, Brasseur (6.9) 2, McCulloeh (6.7) and Braw Scott (6.12) a dead heat, 3. Nineteen started. Won by half a length, with a length and three-quar-ters between second and third. Time, lmin 41 I / 2 see.

MASTERTON MEETING. SECOND DAY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Masterton, Last Night. On the second day of the races there was a large attendance, with very eood weather. The sum of £3098 was'put ' through the totalisator, and nine bookmakers were licensed. Results:— Hack Hurdles—Whakaweira 1, Tern 2, Sleacomlm 3. Also ran: Sylvia Maid, British Eifle and Teutuatu. * Won by a length. Time 2min 49scc. Scurry Handicap—Merrie Fly 1, Palm 2, Portcullis 3. Tradesmen's Handicap—Sir Solo 1, Skye 2, Rill 3. Also ran: First Consul,' Captain Bell, Longwood, St. Lumsden, Bircola, Killsyth, Merry Emerald. Won by a length. Time lmin 29 4-ssec.
