TO THE SOUTH POLE

CAPTAIN SCOTT'S ENTERPRISE. THE LEADER IN CHRISTCHURCH. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchureh, Saturday Night. Captain Seott, R.N., arrived from Wellington this morning and was given a public reception at noon. There was a representative gathering of citizens. The Mayor expressed the pleasure of the people of Christchureh in having Captain Scott again amongst them, and their confidence that he would carry out his enterpri.se in a highly creditable manner. He assured Captain Scott of the willingness of the Christchureh people to assist wherever possible. Mr. R. M. Laing., president of the Philosophical Society, and Bishop Grimes also spoke. Captain Scott, in replying, thanked the people of the. city for their welcome. He knew he had the sympathy of New Zealand people, and the best way the public could assist now was by leaving the members of the expedition in peace to carry out their hard work during the next month in preparing for the final departure. GENEROSITY OP NEW ZEALANDERS. Christchureh, Last Night. At the civic reception to Captain Scott yesterday, the Mayor stated he felt certain that whatever Capain Scott's requirements might be in the way of equipment, the people of Canterbury would do their best to supply him. Captain Seott, responding, referred to the generosity of the Government of New Zealand in giving £IOOO to the expedition. Captain Scott visits the do;js and ponies on Quail Island to-morrow. The Terra Nova will be docked on Wednesday or Thursday, and will probably call at Port Chalmers on the way to the Antarctic to top off her coal supply.
