' ! TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Masterton Racing Club's spring meeting opens to-day, and will be concluded on Saturday. Lady Lucy is galloping as well as anything at Flemington, and may have to be reckoned with in the Melbourne Cup with 7st 121b.
St Lumsden and Clemora have paid up for their Masterton engagements, ana both horses are reported to be verywell. Sandstream arrived at Riccarton on Wednesday, and is said to be in good condition to tackle the New Zealand Cup next week. Bliss went down by the same boat, and will be ridden by Jockey R. Young in the Stewards' Handicap. The hurdler Te Ru promises to start well backed in his next few engagements. On Otaki form the weight adjusters have not been unduly severe with the jumper. Rauparaha was railed to Masterton on Tuesday, and is engaged in the Cup ana Publicans' Handicap on the first, day. The Aucklander can travel fast for a mile, but may find the company too select over a longer distance. Great interest should be aroused in the meeting of Sir Antrim and Merrivonia in the Masterton Cup. Both horses ran well forward at Trentham, and are nicely suited by a ten furlong course. With Iranui included, a good finish seems imminent. The handicapper appears to have taken good care of Bismarck in the hurdles at Waverley, and at the weights most people would prefer the chance of Taupo, Kotare, Waikaraka and others. Longstep showed ability to travel fast at Trentham, where he just failed to score. His running at Masterton this week will be keenly watched. It transpires that Master Soult pullea up lame after contestjng the Caulfield Cup, and although his party had put in fairly heavily on their horse for the Melbourne Cup, it was deemed advisable to scratch him. First Battery was returned a winner ' at Wanganui last month, and is considered a likely starter at Masterton. Trainer W. Davis has the horse .in great heart. Te Arai is being hacked about at the Hutt, and is in consequence looking fine and robust. The Great Northern winner will be all there when the big fences loom ahead once again. The Poverty Bay spring meeting will be concluded to-day. Racina is sometimes carried on under difficulties in these parts, but probably the experience of the Benon (South Africa) racing club is unique. Just as the horses were lined up for the first race the grass track caught fire and the flames held everything up for an hour and a-half. Meanwhile the bar did a roaring trade, and after the fire had subsided the racing went on as usual. : Tliere must be "hot-stuff" racing over that way. i
