lieutenant Venning, at present in Wellington, has received a cablegram stating that he lias been commissioned to H.M.S. Dreadnought. Mr. Henry St. George has awarded the Plunket Medal for Music to Gladys Stoneham, of Dunedin. The winner is only fourteen, and was entered lor the senior division for pianoforte. Mr. Cyril Towsey, a well-known Kew Zealand' pianist, is receiving excellent notices for his work as accompanist in Madame Melba's company in the English provinces. Madame Melba hcrselt has a special accompanist. Mr. E. G. F. Zorah, manager of the Chatham Island Fisheries, Ltd., lias been on a visit to the Chathams. The company's refrigerating works were expected to be ready for operations on Monday last. The refrigerator capacity will be about (10 tons. The first consignment of fish will probably be delivered in Wellington by the end of next month.
The death is announced of Colonel Henry Douglas Mackenzie, ex-Command-ant of the Tasmanian forces. A son; ol the Rev. Charles Mackenzie, of the Mackenzies of Coul, Ross-shire, he was born on September 20, IS4O, and served for a time in the I'oval Nary. Arriving iri Australia, he joined the New South Wales military forces, and acted as brigade-major with the Soudan Expedition in 1805, was mentioned in dispatches and received a medal with clasp and the Khedive Star. Afterwards he was As-sistant-Adjutant-General of the New South Wales forces, and Assistant-Ad-jutant-General and Chief Staff Officer. In 1904 he took command Of the Tasmanian forces,
