TRADE WAR THREATENED.

AMERICA AND GERMANY. THE UNITED STATES RETALIATES. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright. Received 27, 10.25 a.m. London, October 27. Router's Berlin correspondent states that Mr. Knox, American Secretary of State, has intimated that he is bound to resist the wrong inflicted on Americans by the German retro-active tax on potash. Contracts were made in good faith with German exporters. Mr. Davis, special commissioner, has informed the German Government that unless the demands are satisfied the provision in the American Tariff Law imposing an extra 25 per eent. on imports from nations discriminating against the United States will probably be applied to German exports. Thus a trade war is in prospect which will certainly react on the political friendship cultivated between Berlin and Washington since 1897.
