WEST COAST LEASES.
NATIVES INTERVIEW THE HON.. CARROLL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington,. Yesterday. About 100 natives interested in West Coast native leases are at present in, Wellington on business connected with, their lands. Many leases granted in 1881 will shortly be falling in, and pake-] ha leaseholders are urging amendment j in the law which will bring the lancU under the operation of the Act of 1892. This Act gives the tenant perpetual right of renewal with revaluation every] 21 years. The Act of 1881 provides that at the end of 21 years, leases (which are at present administered by the Public Trustee) shall be put up to auction, and disposed of to the highest bidder, the improvements of the outgoing tenant being limited to £45 per acre. The, natives, who had an informal gathering with Mr. Carroll to-day, are anxious to have the position adjusted in such a way that they will be given j some hope of securing the working of at least some of their land, and that they will "not be kept out of possession ) for ever."
