DIPHTHERIA IX SYDNEY. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, October 26. The diphtheria epidemic which has been raging for months is steadily abating. Deaths, which were only abouii 2 per cent, in former years, ranged from 25 to 00 per cent. SUEZ CANAL DUES. Melbourne, October 26. The Federal Government has received advices from the British authorities confirming the reduction in Suez Canal dues by 5d per ton, to operate from January 1 next. WEALTH OF VICTORIA. Melbourne, October 26. A return tabled in the Assembly shows that the total net wealth of Victoria is £429,250,000, and the total rateable value of property £252,000,000.
THE FEDERAL TELEGRAPHS. Melbourne, October 26. Mr. Hughes addressing the Telegraph Operators' Conference, intimated that the Government intended to make the Telegraph Department a paying concern, and at the same! time give the public a thoroughly efficient service. THE DUTCH FLEET. Adelaide, October 26. The Dutch fleet has arrived, and a round' of festivities has been arranged.
JEALOUSY AGAIN. Brisbane, October 26. A black gin has been murdered in the blacks' camp at Thargomindah. Jealousy was the cause. THE WESTRALIAN BUDGET. Jerth, October 26. In the Assembly the Premier delivered the Budget. The year ended with a surplus of £221,000. He estimated the revenue for the current year at £3,737,047, and the expenditure at £3,633,343. TARIFF ANOMALIES. Melbourne, October 26. The Federal Ministry have completed a Bill for the rectification of tariff anomalies. There will, however, be no general revision till next session.
