NEW BISHOP APPOINTED. By Telegraph.— t-ress Association. Auckland, Yesterday. The Anglican Synod, after taking several votes on a number of names for the election of a new bishop, in conmittee, in open session appointed th# Rev. John Primal Maud, Vicar of St. Mary Redcliil', Bristol. England, the vote being practically unanimous. BISHOP-ELECT ELECT DECLINES THE APPOINTMENT. . A DEADLOCK OCCURS. 1 Auckland, Last Night. Matters in connection with the election of the Anglican Bishop, in succession to Dr. Noligan, have arrived at a deadlock. A little after midnight last nijht the ■Synod elected the Rev. John" Primal Maud, vicar of St. Marv's, RedclifTe, Bristol, to the vacant bishopric, but he ha? now cabled that he is unable to accept the appointment, owing to family reasons. It has been decided that consideration of the election of a bishop be postponed to an adjourned session of the Synod to be held at a time to be fixed by the Standing Committee.
The Rev. John Primal Maud M.A., Oxon., was ordained Deacon in 1888 and Priest in 1889. In 1004 he was appointed vicar of the large and important West of England parish of Redcliff, Bristol, which in church circles is recognised as one of the most active and important parishes in England. He is Rural Dean v of Bedminster, and is Hon. Chaplain to the Bishop of Glasgow. He has also acted as commissary to the Bishop of Pretoria, South Africa.
