A REVOLTING CRIME.
DEATH SENTENCE COMMUTED. Received 29, 9.40 p.m. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, October 25. Cabinet has considered the case of Phillips, who was sentenced to death for the murder of his child on April 10, and decided, although the crime was a revolting one, to commute the sentence to imprisonment for life and to take steps to see he was never reelased. They held that the crime was not premeditated, and the death penalty was unlikely to deter other criminals who might be likely to commit similar offences in a moment of excitement.
