THE OPUNAKE RAILWAY
DEPUTATION TO THE MINISTRY. PREMIER'S REPLY NOT ENCOURAGING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. . Wellington, Monday. A deputation representing the local bodies in Opunake district waited on the Ministers to-day to urge the construction of a railway from Opunake to the main line. The deputation stated that the bodies interested were prepared to guarantee the cost of construction. The Premier said that when they asked for definite information they would not get it, nor would any other deputation, before the Public Works Statement was brought down. Unless the country went in for an enormous, borrowing policy it could not possibly meet all the demands for railways. The Government would do the country a great injury if it launched out m response to pressing requests. There would he no trouble about getting the money. The question was how much the Government would borrow. He could make no promise nor statcmeivt whatever. The Hon. R. McKenzie promised to visit T;uanaki.
