THE HINE ALLEGATIONS

FURTHER DISCUSSION IN PARLIAMENT. By Tclegraphi—Press Association. Wellington, List Night. ■ln the House of Representatives tonight, Mr. Hanan (chairman of the Iline Committee) presented his report, which recommended that the charges be referred to the Supreme Court Judges for investigation and report. Uo moved that the report lie on the table ami lie printed. Sir Joseph -Ward reiterated his reasons for referring the matter to the Judges, which he gave before the committee. He pointed out that those who had at first demanded this course now clamored against it. Party feeling and bitterness had been imported into the question. ■Mr. Eraser asked the Premier what was to be referred to the Judges—the Hine charges or something else? Sir Joseph Ward replied that any other charges which might be made would also be investigated. Mr. Fraser considered this an unfair procedure. Mr. Herries suggested that before submitting the order of reference to the Governor it should be placed before the committee, who could report to the House. Sir Joseph Ward said he did not proposed to do this. When the Chief Justice | agreed to two Judges being appointed the Governor would be recommended to make the appointment. Whatever was ' required to give the Judges necessary | power to investigate and report would be | done.

Mr. Russell complained that Sir Joseph Ward's removal of the matter from the committee was not treating his party fairly. If the report were adopted no other charges could he investigated, as the report specifically mentioned those charges and no other. ' Hon. T. Mackenzie said the Premier was justified in the action ho had taken, as the whole basis of the charges had been altered since the names were divulgodi •■■.■>: The report was adopted by S3 to 8. '"'
