A MAGNIFICENT ANNUAL

One of the most welcome and the mosx beautiful publication issued in the..Southern Hemisphere is the Christmas number of the Weekly Press, published under the title of "New Zealand Illustrated." Year by year it sets the mark of excellence in'printingand design for the Dominion. This year's issue, which is just to hand, places the art of printing in New Zealand one step further, and forms the finest advertisement that can lie given for our beautiful scenery and our attractive outdoor life. The beauty spots of the Dominion are taken irrespective of locality, and thus we have the brightest scenes of the North alongside the equally beautiful but less brilliantly-lighted beauties of the South. It is this artful medley which forms one of the great attractions of "New Zealand Illustrated." The constant change of scenery, combined with the light, airy decorations, rests the eves, and makes us appreciate our beautiI fill country more than would be the case if the pictures were arranged by districts, where the scenery is likely to be of a similar character. Maori subjects, which have formerly been given such large space, have been relegated to two pages, but the pictures selected for these two are of a very fine character, and show us our noble native race in most pleasing form. Published, as ''New Zealand Illustrated" is, when the holiday and seaside season is at its height, it is meet that much space should be devoted to happy childhood. Of this there are several pages, but those that will live longest in the memory form the centre opening, in which a wondering child is depicted listening to the story of the Sand Gnome, and on the opposite page is the Gnome himself. These two pages are admirably produced in colors. Lovers of the sea will rejoice in the numerous \ery fine seascapes and yachting pictures. Among the 1WI) pictures which go to make up this number, there are none which could be done without, and collectively they form one of the finest New Zealand albums it has even been our lot to see. From end to end the number is a joy of lightness, brightness and color, and will enhance the high reputation established by former numbers.
