RIOTS IN GUADELOUPE
RIOTERS KILLED AND WOUNDED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 18, 10.30 p.m. Guadeloupe Island, October 18. Five men and three women were killed and 25 wounded during election rioting at Basse Terre. The gendarmes fired upon the crowd.
Basse-Torre is the capital of the French island of Guadeloupe in the West Indies, and has a population of 0500. Guadeloupe is the most important of the antilles. The population is about 185.000, and the people are mostly black or mulatto. French troops preserve what order is possible, and there is a varied franchise. The people are mainly employed in growing sugar and coffee and in re-erecting their houses after destruction by earthquakes. Columbus discovered Guadeloupe, and the French occupied it in 1810.
