PURIFYING THE SPORT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christcliureh, Last Night. At the liftt meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Boxing Association a newspaper report of the case of assault 'by a person who had competed at the Association tournament was read. The assault was of a most unprovoked character, and the person committing it had been sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labor. The Association had disqualified the offender for life, and asked the Council Committee's endorsement of the disqualification. In agreeing to this, the Council Committee instructed the secretary to convey to the Otago Association the Committee's appreciation of the determination of the Otago Association to drastically punish all actions calculated to injure the sport. The Northern Association (Auckland) wrote forwarding a certified statement that Ellis, of Wellington, who has been selected to represent New Zealand in the Australasian bantam championship, on being weighed the day before the championship was commenced, was found to be ISlb overweight. The Council secretary Reported that he had written to the secretary of the Wellington Association requesting him to ask Ellis for an explanation of the circumstance.
