A BREACH OF FAITH.

To the Editor. ! Sir. —I desire to bring under your notice what I consider, a gross breach oi faith and injustice. Some four years , ago the local Poultry Society offered a, ' special prize of £.> 5s (trophy) for a certain class of exhibit, to be won twice ! in succession or three times at intervals . before it became the property of the winner. After several exhibitors had se- . cured a ''leg in'' for this trophy, it was eventually won by one of the oldest ana most enthusiastic members of the So- ' cicty. who, although a working man, liao for years past devoted a considerable amount of time and money as a breeder of exhibits for sliow purposes, more as a j hobby than personal gain, and he gladly anticipated the special prize as a certain amount of reward for his labors. lit; intimated to the Society that as no particular form of trophy had been scheduled or acquired, he would prefer a marble clock, and would be willing to pay additional cost over and above the £5 ss, if any. On enquiry at one of the local business houses he found the article he required could be purchased at £4 10s. and lie was prepared to accept that and give the Society the benefit of the balance. For some unexplainable reason this did not meet with the Society's wishes, who made enquiries through a wholesale firm in one of the larger centres (which in itself is mosu unfair to the local busine-s houses who contribute towards the funds of the Society), and. instead of a marble block beir.g obtained, a French article of a different kind, alleged to cost £°> los, and obtainable here at £2 18s. was offered and not accepted, as the winning exhibitor expected at least fair value. The Society now has cancelled this prize altogether, which, to my mind, is most unjust treatment to c-xtcnd to a- man who has interested himself in the welfare of the Society for so many years, and who in the first place was prepared to accept a trophy of less than the face
