"SPARING THE ROD."
To' the Editor. * Sir, —I might possibly be permitted'' 5 just to endorse the opinions of your, ( correspondent. in your issue* ' of the 11th inst., against the chastise-. ( ment bv the rod in schools or for chil-- ] dren universally, although it may call < in question the marvellous wisdom 01! ( Solomon, who, doubtless blessed with in-. 1 numerable progeny, must unquestionably. ) have found ]t difficult to maintain or- j der among the offsprings of ■ his count- s less ladies without tlie application of- s "stick." Such a doctrine that "Sparing •( the rod spoils the child" may have held f good or obtained in some barbaric or ; savage times, but its very opposite ought ( to hold true among a more civilised and 1 1 enlightened people of a cultured human- ( ity; and, indeed, not impossibly-parental j child-whackers and wife-lieaters might: < be quite as deserving themselves: of the ( "rod" or of the acquaintance ; of-, the E "cat" as their unruly juveniles, for whom l it is time all such forcible corporal 1 modes ,of tuition or punishment as that j instanced by your correspondent (Mr. i Hill) in this morning's paper, of half a j school being, caned, should be consigned i to the barbaric past as relies of an age 1 of rudeness, uncultivation and violence, i .—I am, etc., C.W.W. 1 Fitzroy, October 13. •]
