Willcox. hi reference to ;i settler (Mr. Clew) on the Arawhata ro:ul cutting a water-(our-e Iriim his prop.rty to the road, the foreman said the oth'-r settlers did not object to the water being turned into the i<:,.;! drain, and thai, if Mr. I'lcrg agreed to clear the Board's drain so as to allow liie water to :jet away, no damage woukl

.Air. Willcox said he had dwelt with the fencing question as between the Board and"" -Mr. Newton King saleyards, the latter to put up a substantial fence on the site as previously agreed to. .Mr. Willcox moved that the clerk be empowered to sell pipes whenever enquired for.—Seconded by Mr. Harvey and carried.

Mr. linker applied, per Mr. Willcox, for some draining work to be done so as to give access to his drain on the Tarua road.—The foreman reported that about scv, u chains would be required. It would {five Mr. linker an outlet, and he would donate £1 towards the cost of the work.—Seven chains to be done. On the motion of Messrs Willcox and ])ucker. the necessary i'ormalitk-s required l>v resolution in respect of State guarantee debentures for lliaia, road special loan were passed. Tlu> monev is available.

Messrs Malone, Anderson and Johnston wrote stating that the Werekiuo Koad Board wanted this 'Board to co-operate for a joint loan of £3tt!W, under the State (iuaranked Loans Act. to metal the l'uniho road from the main road to the reserve, providing the settlers in both districts would agree to be rated equally.—The clerk will write the Were"kiiio Road Hoard that this Hoard has had no intimation from the settlers on the matter, but had no objection, providing the settlers were agreeable to b? rated, although they could not see how it could be granted, seeing that metalling would be old work and did not come within the scope of the Statute.

Mr. T. B. Synjoein wrote that the upper portion of the Euaker.c road all last winter was in an almost impassable condition, and he respectfully requested that some improvements be effected before next winter.—The foreman is to inspect ah., report at next meeting. • Mr. Willcox brought up the matter of Mrs. Kahui's request to have Phillips' gate 'removed on the road giving an outlet to the Kahui road, and detailed the circumstances.—Mr. Willcox will deal with the questions, and if the removal of thp gate or gates is insisted upon, then the Board has no option but to remove, them.

Mr. Howman waited on tno Hoard, on behalf, of the settlers, in r.ference to the special-rate levy to be spent on the Opua road. Mr. Bowman said the distance proposed to b?, metalled was 4'/ a miles, and the amount to be collected by special rate was ;t250. The settlers had agreed to recommend the Board to split the amount into quarters, and for every miles and a quarter of the road to spend £G2 on it. Between the creamery and the main road is two chains over the mile and a-quarkr, but the settlers do not want more than £(!2 spent on that length. M.\ Bowman later said the top quarter was in good order. It only required about £5 to be spent on it. and the settlers w,?re willing that the balance of the £G2 should be spent near the creamery, where the trafli-j is heaviest, Afkr some discussion, Mv. Willcox moved that the settlers consult with the foreman as to the best ways and means of metalling the road.

Mr. Harvey move! that the special rr.k' be spent according to the suggestions made by the settlers' representatives.—Seconded by Mr. Dueker and carried.

The chairman said it was the best way of safeguarding the top end settlers. In nearlv every case where a special loan had been raised for a road the bottom end settlers got the best of it, as the money never went far enough to give the top end settlers any metalled road, with the result that the top end ratepayers had to go in for a second loan to get access, and all the while paid an additional rate for the lower end of the road. With Mr. Hamilton's section and a native section left out, the lower end settlers on the Opua road got a fair share of the present arrangement Abridged from Times.
