The employment of permanent staff hands in place of the men who struck for higher wages laying blocks in Rundle street led to trouble. The men at work were guarded by police. When they knocked off a section of the large crowd watching broke the police cordon and attacked the strike-breakers. The police, freely using their batons, drove them back. One man was arrested.
