STRATFORD DAY BY DAY

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. The Borough Councillors should be getting quite used to late hours, and if, as is frequently said, the local bodies are the nurseries for our politicians, aspirants for the honorarium of £3OO should be quite used to the task of a stonewall. Last night the Council continued their meeting, commenced on Tuesday and at 11.30 adjourned. It is evident that the councillors themselves are beginning to get tired of meeting often and late, for prior to business commencing last night it was decided by motion that the rules of debate be adhered to. The business had not gone very far, though the clock showed that time had fled, when the Mayor had to observe that unless the Council wasted less time fortnightly meetings would have to be held. Then a councillor suggested that a time limit of two minutes be placed on the speeches of councillors, and another civic father pointedly touched on the true reason by remarking that if councillors could be prevented from speaking more than once to each motion a lot of the trouble would be done away with.

The Electric Light Committee reported to the Council as follows: committee have to report that they havp again conferred -with the committee of the Stratford Electrical Supply Company with reference to the acquisition of the latter's undertaking and plant, and now beg to recommend as follows: (1) That, subject to the ratepayers' sanctioning a loan for the purpose, the Council take the necessary steps to acquire the company's plant at a price to be fixed by arbitration and conditionally upon the company accepting the sum of £2500 for their leases, concessions, grant, goodwill and rights under the Stratford Electric Lighting Act. (2) That a committee consisting of Crs. Ralfe, Young and Paget be appointed to obtain information and report on the cost of obtaining expert evidence as to the voltage of current supplied by the company. (3) That the Council be furnished with a detailed report on the cost of a Supreme Court ruling on any legal points that the Council may require a decision upoV
