CLERK AND COUNTY COUNCIL
CHARGE OF EMBEZZLEMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunediii, Last Xight. At Milton to-day, before Mr. Bartholomew, S.M., Gilbert Scott, formerly aclerk in the employ of the Bruce County Council, was charged with having received sums of £2O lis Od, £-22 3s. and £5 Os10s and omitting to enter the same on', the books, with intent to defraud theCouncil. Evidence was given at length for the prosecution and accused, whoreserved his defence, was committed for trial. It is stated that the Council has written off over £2200 in connection with the rates for 1004, Km, l'.HHi and 1007. The case for the prosecution was that when accused received a cheque a receipt might or might not have ibccn given. If one were given, it was from what was< practically a private receipt hook, the block, of which cannot be found. The cheque was then paid into the Council'saccount, and the prosecution suggested that accused took funds which made the; Bank's account and the Council's book: tally.
