STRATFORD DAY BY DAY

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. Labor Day. If it was not for the fact that the banks are closed and in the windows of each establishment hangs a notice assigning the cause of the premises being closed, probably the majority of the residents would have been unaware that to-day was supposed to be a holiday in honor of labor. Factory proprietors may have cause to remember the fact, but otherwise mot .even the men who are supposed to be interested care a hang about the day. It is like a great many legislative holidays — a farce. Whilst on the topic o-f holidays there seems plenty of room for improvement. To the average individual who has not time to refer to the calendar for ithe purpose of ascertaining the natal days of the various saints, whose memories it is hoped to keep evergreen by decreeing that the banks shall be closed, it seems that a better system for the ■fixing of holidays might be reasonably arranged. Taking the banks first, for they appear to get the most, there art many difficulties in the way of allowing a fluctuation, according to locality and the whim of the residents, as to the day of the weekly half-holiday. Nevertheless it must be admitted it would be a great deal better for business people, and probably for the officials of the banks, if the same day for the weekly half-holiday for the townspeople was the day on which the banks closed. Take Stratford, for instance. On Thursday afternoon the banks are hard put to find work to keep themselves busy; on Saturdays, when everybody else is busy and the country people have all come in, the banks are shut. It would suit all parties concerned if the banks and everybody else could close on the one clay. The track to the Dawson's Falls Mountain House is in good order with the exception of a portion by the gate. With the warm weather the falls will become a popular resort, and in anticipation of the public visits the caretaker went into residence on Monday.
