WAITARA NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.).

Rev. Demi McKenna has purchased a residence from Mr. A. W. Ogle, near the church. There is a probability of some Sisters being sent to Waitara with a view to opening a school. The reel, hose, hydrant and branch kindly lent bv the New Plymouth Fire Brigade to the local Brigade came to hand on iron'ay evening and was fitted up ready for use in case of necessity immediately after arrival.

The committee appointed for the purpose of selecting 12 suitable men for the Fire Brigade were to meet last night and make the selection. There were over 20 applicants. The report presented at the annual meeting of the Waitara Rowing Club, held last evening, stated: The committee congratulates the monitors for sticking so well together. Great credit is due to them and to supporters generally for building a spacious anil comfortable boat-house. To complete the building, the committee find it necessary to arrange for an overdraft at the Bank, and they are grateful to the guarantors who were so willing to assist the club. The actual cost of < the. building was something over £?.'\ Ore ' s were more successful than t'.iev hav ■ been for a number of years. The club are badly in need of a good whaltboat. The matter of purchasing one received attention but it was deemed too risky a speculation for the club to undertake in their present financial coalition. Thanks are due to Tikorangi and Clifton for the use of their boats for the Waitara regatta. The shed will, soon be connected with the water service, when a shower-bath will be erected and will no doubt be appreciated. A good landing stage is required. The assets of the club are £271 16s and the liabilities £4B (is Id, leaving a credit balance of £225 i)s 11!. whi.-h. under the circumstances, is ver v satisfactory. The insurance on club property is £IOO on the building and £IOO on plant
