GOVERNORSHIP OF FIJI.

PETITION FROM CHIEFS.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. A petition is, says the Fiji Times, to be sent to the King by the outgoing mail, from the chiefs of Fiji, protesting against the possible appointment of Mr. Allardvce, now Governor of the Falkland Islands, to the Governorship of Fiji. The petition is signed by 32 chiefs. The reason given by the chief for the desire to see Mr. Mahaffy, ex-Colonial Secretary of Fiji, made Governor, is that he "understands the natives."
